Co-founder Alex grew up in Kherson, the great Ukrainian port city, spending much of his childhood touring the USSR with a troupe of folk dancers. Summers spent with his grandmother, selling wildflowers to pay for treats, sparked an early passion for entrepreneurship. In 2008, armed with an MBA, he moved to London – working in marketing by day and running clubs by night. A growing sense of nostalgia among expats – for community, conversation, and the ultimate hangover cure – led him to the idea of launching a banya in the capital.
That’s when he met Rob – a Yorkshireman who had first discovered banya on a family trip to the Baltic. The two shared a vision: to bring the ultimate Bath House to London.
They embarked on an extended journey across Europe’s most iconic bathhouses – from Sochi to St Petersburg, Riga to Kyiv – to distil the true essence of the banya. When they discovered a Grade II-listed former bank directly across from Buckingham Palace, they knew it was the perfect home. After extensive renovations, The Bath House opened its doors in December 2019.
We haven’t simply elevated a great European ritual – we’re also proud to be reviving a bathing tradition that was once central to British life.
